Engines On!

After a brief respite, the Monkey pencils are back in the ON position. So Monkeyman Little fires out the layouts and Monkeyman Ostley gets to work on the fancy panel borders for a new flashback sequence. Turn it up!

Monkey Takes a Holiday

Howdy Monkeylovers!

Long time, no talkee! Busy times for the monkeymen in the monkeyhouse. Lots of bananas in the air.

Hope you've been enjoying Kung Fu Monkeyface, we've been having a ball making it. But now it's time for a pause, a respite, a big ol' banana-break if you will. The Gabester's busy putting the finishing touches on another graphic novel he's been hard at work on and so we're gonna have to put the monkey back in the cage for awhile.

We've got an epic story planned out for ol' Monkeyface and even more pages in the can, but this seems like a good point to press pause for a bit. Thanks for following along, and keep your eyes on the Monkeybunnyüberblog for news about when and where the monkey will return!

From the Ape Archive

Ah, Friday! Can't ya just smell the bananas?

Today we dive in the ape archives to present an alternate version of page 15.

Now you might say, "Why, that looks supercool as is! Why fix it if it ain't broke?"

To which I would reply "Because I can."

You see, young Gabe Ostley draws whatever I tell him to. He simply can't help it. He is compelled. So on occasion I enjoy making him redraw perfectly good pages just for heehaws and jollies. And he totally does it! It's nuts!

Nah. It was really kind of a timing thing. The page needed to denote something of a transition from one scene to the next, and with Monkeyface looking back over his shoulder he seemed to be a little bit too "in the moment" to indicate the transition we were looking for.

See, now wasn't the first explanation more fun?

Have a grand weekend, Monkeylovers!

Sophie Bangs.

I think there's a character or a celebrity or whoever named Sophie Bangs.

In any case, it is a cool moniker.

Behind the Monkey

Good friday, Monkeylovers!

It's time for another peek... BEHIND THE MONKEY!

That's right, it's that exciting portion of the Monkeybunnyüberblog experience where we take a peek under the skirts of the Monkeymen and see if they really go commando.

Let's breakdown the process of page 30, shall we?

Page 30

Panel 1

Long panel, long shot. Monkeyface walks down the sidewalk. There are a few other pedestrians. The pack of about a dozen Ninjas spin and cartwheel over the rooftops and fire escapes of the neighborhood brownstones, trailing their prey.

Panel 2

Close on Monkeyface as he turns a corner. Worm's eye view. Up and over MF's shoulder we can see the ninjas leaping across the buildings, still on his trail.

Panel 3

Over the shoulder shot of the ninjas on the corner of a building. Monkeyface is now walking down a deserted side street - street lamps throwing pools of light in the gloom. One of the Ninjas draws back a bow and arrow, aiming at Monkeyface.

Panel 4

An arrow whizzes toward an oblivious Monkeyface.

SFX: Fffffffft

Panel 5

At the last second, Monkeyface whirls and catches the arrow in his fist.

Panel 6

Angle on the ninjas, all of them pulling back their bowstrings.

PENCILS (and gray tones):

And there you have it! The final version with colors (well, one color) is just a few posts below).

That's it for this edition of BEHIND THE MONKEY!
Join us next time, whenever we get around to doing it again!

A Tale of Two Fiddys page 1

A Tale of Two Fiddys

Today's the day! The start of our ten-page epic prequel to The Hammer!

Can ten pages really be all that epic? You decide!

Return of the Fiddy

Howdy Hammerfans! Long time no Hammerobilia!

But that's all about to change next Wednesday when the Monkeybunnyüberblog will present page one of a special 10 or so page pre-Hammer prequel:

A Tale of Two Fiddys

We've been kicking this thing around for awhile. The script was a leftover from the old Halcyon Hammer days and we were gonna use it as a bit of filler to give the Hammerfans something to chew on between Seasons. First Rob was gonna draw it. Then Gabe was gonna draw it. Then The Hammer didn't get picked up, Zuda collapsed, and everyone just sort of forgot about the darn thing.

So then I (that's Sam Little to you) decided to dust it off and see what I could do with it for old time's sake. The result is kind of a hodgepodge of sketches that I cobbled together while lying around on the beach drinking beer. And it probably shows. But I'm pretty pleased with it all in all.

So check in next Wednesday, and nine Wednesdays thereafter, for a reunion with our pal Buck Fiddy as he waxes nostalgic about Big Daddy Tree.
